"Hacienda Valencia" Tacubaya, México 1723
The legend says that San Honesto was born into a poor family from Tacubaya, Mexico on December 9, 1723. His mother and father worked as olive pickers and his brother produced “pulque”(an alcoholic beverage made from the fermented juice of the maguey.) They spent all their lives working in the olive and maguey hacienda owned by a rich Gachupin family (Born in Spain).
"Axayácatl's (water mask) First Miracle" Tacubaya, México 1723
San Honesto’s first miracle took place when he was just a baby; one day when his father Tenoch was beating his mother Xochitl, he started crying. To comfort the baby his father went to embrace him. When he looked at the baby, he saw himself reflected and a feeling of peace overwhelmed him. From that moment on he did not hit his wife again. After this, the baby was named “Axayacatl” (“Water-mask” or “Water-face”) because he reflected only the truth.Saturnino Valencia was the owner of the olive and maguey hacienda; he was a rich and powerful man who came to America with only a few pennies in his pockets. He made his fortune by treating his workers like slaves so he could export his olive oil to Europe.

"Second Miracle, Don Saturnino whith little Axayacatl" Tacubaya, México 1736
Although Saturnino had changed, his workers still hated him. In the need for food they started robbing olive oil and pulque and selling it on the black market. Axayacatl’s brother Nelli, hated Saturnino more than anything in the world. He blamed him for the death of his parents and for the hunger and misery of everyone else, so he made sure everything ran smoothly during the robberies.
Nelli started to make money and arranged to marry a criolla, a Spanish woman born in Mexico. With this he managed to buy his social class as a criollo to start his own hacienda. He promised his workers, friends and family fair wages and respect. Everybody believed in him, but within a few years his desire for wealth grew stronger. He started to forget his promise and more importantly his blood and people.
"Third Miracle, Nelly whith his brother San Honesto" Tacubaya, México 1749
Nelli got very sick and Axayacatl approached him and gave him a mirror. He asked Nelli what he saw; as Nelli was about to answer, he saw Saturnino’s face reflected in the mirror. He understood he had become what he hated the most. Out of regret, Nelli became extremely sick. At Nelli’s deathbed, Axayacatl told his brother not to judge others and to forgive himself. With these words, Nelli forgave himself and gathered strength to live. Nelli told his brother he had a lot to teach, because of this Axayacatl became a preacher for his people. People started to call him San Honesto because he spoke with only the truth and an open heart. As word of the third miracle spread, people who hated, repressed and abused others started to visit San Honesto looking for a cure. The first of them was Saturnino, who had been suffering. San Honesto told him, “Do to others what you would like others do to you, respect others as you would respect yourself and you will be cured.” San Honesto devoted his life to become an example to follow. He always spoke with the truth and awoke the consciousness of many. He died with a smile on May 13, 1817 at the age of 94.
The legend says that San Honesto used to preach to his people standing on a maguey. He was not afraid of the fearful spines. He used to say that if somebody wanted to hurt you, you should not give it importance and you would not be hurt. Don’t treat aggression with aggression; instead, treat people as you want others to treat you, “be the mirror of others”. People hurt others because they are afraid or because the only thing they know is fear.
